Small-business SEO, in the order that matters

Most SEO advice is a list written by someone selling SEO. An owner with no spare time doesn't need more tactics — they need to know what comes first. Full disclosure up front: we don't sell SEO, and this guide won't end by pretending we do.

Quick answer

Before any tactic, your site must load and be readable: 53% of mobile visitors abandon a page that takes longer than 3 seconds (Google, 2016), and the modern standard is 2.5 seconds or less (web.dev, 2019). The owner's order: a fast site with real text first; then plain words saying what you do and where; then one page per real service; everything else — links, blogs, tools — after. And two honest truths: SEO is slow, and nobody honest guarantees rankings.

Most SEO advice is written by people selling SEO

The standard checklists — keyword research, Google Business Profile, content, backlinks — aren't wrong. They're unordered. And an unordered list is a sales device: if everything matters equally, you need someone to manage everything, and that someone bills monthly. An owner with a business to run needs a hierarchy instead — what's load-bearing, what's optional, what's premature.

First: a site search engines can fetch and phones can load

None of the clever tactics matter if the foundation fails. Two checks:

  • Real text, not pictures of text. If your services, menu, or prices live inside a JPEG or a PDF, search engines index almost none of it. Every word a customer might search for should exist as selectable text on a page.
  • Speed a phone tolerates. 53% of mobile visitors abandon a page slower than 3 seconds (Google, 2016); aim for 2.5 seconds or less (web.dev, 2019). Bloated builders, oversized images, and stacked plugins are the usual culprits.

This is the unglamorous layer most retainer pitches skip past — it's a one-time fix, not a recurring line item, so there's nothing to bill monthly for.

Second: say what you do and where, in the customer's words

Search engines match words. If your homepage says "innovative solutions for modern living" and your customers type "plumber in Mesa," you've told Google nothing it can use. State the service and the place in plain language — in the page title, in the first heading, in the visible text. Then make it match your Google Business Profile exactly: same name, same address, same phone, same hours. Boring beats clever here, every time.

Third: one page per real service

If you do roof repair, gutter installation, and inspections, those are separate pages — each with its own plain title and its own paragraph covering what, where, and how to get a quote. One page per real service. Not dozens of near-duplicate pages stuffed with town names — search engines got wise to that years ago, and customers never liked it.

Everything else is real — and it comes after, slowly

Backlinks, blog posts, reviews, schema tools: all genuinely matter, all compound, all belong after the floor is fixed. Two warnings that most vendor content omits. SEO is slow — results build over months, not weeks, and anyone promising fast rankings is describing paid ads or describing fiction. And nobody honest guarantees rankings at all; Google's results are not for sale to your SEO vendor.

Our take

We don't sell SEO — no retainers, no ranking promises. We sell the floor it stands on: clean vanilla code, real text, and your existing content kept intact.

Where a redesign fits — and where it honestly doesn't

A redesign cannot do your SEO. What it can do is stop your website from failing the first test. We recreate your existing site as clean vanilla HTML/CSS/JS — real selectable text, proper headings, no builder bloat — with your existing content and images kept, which means whatever search standing your words have already earned stays on the page. $49 buys the code, same day. $99 adds 3 detailed revision rounds at the standard 48 hours. $249 combines up to 3 templates with 5 revision rounds and hosting, SSL, and domain handling — live in 7 days. Free preview first: a real page you can edit and publish in one click, no credit card.

When this isn't right for you

  • You want ongoing SEO campaigns. Link building, content calendars, rank tracking — that's a marketing-retainer buy from an SEO firm, not a redesign. We don't offer it.
  • Your site is already fast and readable. If the floor is solid and you're chasing competitive rankings, your money goes to content and links, not design.
  • You need a site written from scratch. We rebuild from your existing content. Full copywriting is its own market — outsourced site copywriting alone runs $5,000 to $15,000 (AWAI, 2026).

If your site fails the load-and-read test, fix the floor before buying anything monthly. Drop your URL and see your existing content rebuilt on clean, fast code — free, before you decide. Get the free preview →

Frequently asked questions

How do I do SEO for my small business website?
In order: make the site fast with real, selectable text; state what you do and where in plain words that match your Google Business Profile; give each real service its own page. Links, blogs, and tools come after that floor is fixed.
How long does SEO take to work?
Months, not weeks — it compounds slowly. Anyone promising fast rankings is describing paid ads or overpromising.
Does redesigning my website hurt SEO?
It can, if the redesign discards your content and page structure. A redesign that keeps your existing text and pages preserves what those words have already earned.
Do I need to pay for SEO services?
Not first. Fix the technical floor and the plain-language basics before committing to anything monthly; a retainer makes sense later, when you want compounding growth campaigns on top of a solid site.
